ABSTRACT

To compare the results of 20% silver nitrate and galvanic cautry for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. SETTING: ENT department Mayo Hospital, Lahore: DESIGN: Retrospective study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 100 patients of allergic rhinitis with age range of 16 years to 50 years from Oct 1992 to Oct 1995. Taking into consideration the morbidity and beneficial effects of using 20% silver nitrate cautry and galvanic cautry for the treatment of allergic rhinitis detailed results are studied. 20% silver nitrate cautry is far superior than galvanic cautry for the treatment of allergic rhinitis

ABSTRACT

Recurrent tonsillitis is a common infection. This study stresses on proper clinical assessment. This was conducted on 80 cases which needed tonsillectomy. At surgery gentle dissection minimizes blood loss. Average blood loss was 85 ml. Tonsil core swabs showed pathogenic bacteria in 36% tonsils. All the patients were followed up for a period from 3 months to 4 years. Most patients [96%] were found to have significant reduction of sore throat, fever and obstructive symptoms in the follow up period. We conclude that Tonsillectomy is the main stay for chronically infected Tonsils

ABSTRACT

Chronic ear infection is not always amenable to medical management. We report a study of 45 cases of mastoidectomies for chronic discharging ears. Thirty six patients out of 45 had cholesteatoma. Intracranial and extracranial postaural abcess is most often accompanied by extensive cholesteatoma, complications were seen in 17% cases. Mean preoperative hearing level was 40 dB and the mean air bone gap was 28 dB. Canal wall down mastoidectomy was performed in 42 patients. Majority of the ears [82%] were free of any residual or recurrent disease after a minimum period of 3 months follow up. Microscopic examination of middle ear after suction clearance was essential part of preoperative evaluation and post operative follow up

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study to assess the clinical presentation, role of C. T. scan in diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach to treat the otogenic intracranial complications was carried out. Twenty patients with otogenic intracranial complications were admitted in a period of 2.5 years. Eighteen out of 20 patients developed complications after chronic middle ear infection with cholesteatoma. Most patients presented at an advanced stage of the disease. C. T. scan was invaluable in early diagnosis. Aggressive broad spectrum antibiotics therapy was done. Early neurosurgical intervention with burhole in 8 patient and craniotomies in 3 patient were followed by ear surgery [open cavity type] in 16 patients. An overall, 15% mortality rate was noted

ABSTRACT

Cryosurgery is the therapeutic application of cold at profoundly low temperatures [below 0 ring above C] for tissue destruction. This is a simple, conservative, painless and time saving procedure. There is favourable healing less scar formation with little or no blood loss. Recurrence rate of 10% is recorded in the literature for cryo-treated benign lesions of head and neck. This series of 188 patients [male-96, female-92] is presented, who were treated with cryosurgery during the period may, 1986 to may, 1991

ABSTRACT

A comparative study of 160 patients who had tympanoplasty performed at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, between the periods of Oct. 1987 and Oct. 1990 is presented. Two types of grafting materials were used in the repair of the tympanic membrance, viz; temporalis fascia and tragal perichondrium with or without cartilage. Results of 99 patients with tragal perichondrium-cartilage vs. 61 patients with temporalis fascia are presented. All these cases were followed up for at least one year. Tragal perichodrium with or without cartilage was found to be superior to temporalis fascia
